Der Ed Boon von Netherrealm kommentierte Johnny Cages Inklusion und erklärte: "Seine Integration in die sterbliche Kombat-Geschichte und das Universum ist ein großer Teil dessen, was dieser Film erforscht. Er ist ein verwaschener Hollywood-Typ, der in dieses magische, ultraviolentierte Ding geworfen wird. Karls Abgabe ist anders als unsere Spiele. Boon neckte eine "lächerlich lustige" Charakter -Einführung. Regisseur Simon McQuoid fügte hinzu: "Wir wollten einen Charakter, der nicht nur völlig albern war ... Es ist ein Charakter, der sofort dorthin gehen und zu hell und wegwirft, wenn wir uns zu sehr in die Art von Käse lehnen. Das Casting von Karl Urban erlaubte, dass diese Figur mehr Tiefe hatte."

Entertainment Weekly bestätigte, dass film genaue Skins für Urbans Johnny Cage, Rudolphs Kitana und Fords Shao Kahn später in diesem Jahr in Mortal Kombat 1 veröffentlicht werden.

Damon Herriman (besserer Mann) schließt sich der Besetzung als Quan Chi an. Josh Lawson und Max Huang kehren trotz ihres Todes im ersten Film überraschenderweise als Kano und Kung Lao zurück.
