Astro Bot Adds 2 Fan-Favorite Bots

Author : Aaliyah Update : Jan 09,2026

Astro Bot has just received a major update, introducing five brand-new challenge levels along with special unlockable bots. Two of these additions are characters from a beloved PlayStation franchise that had previously been absent from the game.

If you prefer to avoid spoilers, we’ll keep it brief: one bot can be rescued in the "High Inflation" challenge level, while the second becomes available only after you complete all five new stages in the Vicious Void Galaxy and save the other bots inside.

Warning! The following section reveals the identity of every bot in the DLC. If you'd rather be surprised, now’s your chance to look away!

The two mystery bots are Cloud and Sephiroth, iconic characters from Final Fantasy 7. Cloud can be unlocked in the High Inflation stage, and Sephiroth joins your team once all five challenge levels are completed.

Including Final Fantasy—especially Final Fantasy 7—has been a long-standing wish among Astro Bot fans. The original game launched with 173 different bot cameos from across PlayStation's history, so the absence of Final Fantasy 7—a series closely linked with PlayStation—stood out. When asked about this earlier, Astro Bot developers pointed to partnership decisions, implying Square Enix had not initially been on board. It appears the publisher has since changed its stance.

Cloud and Sephiroth aren’t the only new faces in this DLC, and they aren’t even the only Square Enix representatives. The company seems to have offered multiple cameos: players will also encounter 2B from Nier: Automata and Serge from Chrono Cross. Atsu from Ghost of Yōtei is also included—though her appearance had been confirmed earlier.

Since its launch, Astro Bot has received regular updates with special challenge stages. It’s no surprise that Team Asobi continues to support the game, given its strong reception. The title sold 1.5 million copies in its first two months and earned a 9/10 score in our review. We described it as “a fantastically inventive platformer that holds particular magic for anyone who loves PlayStation.”
