Black Beacon: The Rising Star in Gacha Gaming
Black Beacon has just arrived on mobile devices, and we've been lucky enough to dive into this Mythic Sci-Fi Action RPG ahead of the general release. Here's our take on this intriguing new game.
Shh! This Is A Library!
The adventure begins in the Library Of Babel, a vast and enigmatic setting drawing inspiration from the biblical Tower Of Babel and Jorge Luis Borges' short story. In Borges' narrative, the library contains every possible combination of letters, housing every conceivable book. You awaken in this mysterious place with no clear memory of your arrival, surrounded by a cast of colorful characters who are equally bewildered. It seems you're destined for something great, but there's a catch: a giant spinning orb threatens to obliterate everyone within 24 hours. Welcome to your first day as a Seer in this labyrinth of bookshelves!
Despite the dark premise, the setting and story have a charmingly wild appeal. The library filled with gibberish books, time travel, and numerous mythological references (including a mysterious bird) create a deep and engaging narrative. The game throws you into the thick of the story, and if you're feeling a bit lost, that's part of the intended experience.
Send Me In, Coach
Black Beacon offers an action-packed RPG dungeon crawler experience with a customizable camera viewpoint. You can opt for a top-down perspective or a free camera setup, which you can adjust with your other hand. The choice is largely a matter of personal preference, but we found the free camera enjoyable.
As you navigate the Library's passageways, the story unfolds in short, episodic sections, each containing several maps. Accessing these sections requires energy, but the game is generous with its allocation, allowing ample playtime. Your journey involves exploring areas, solving puzzles, hunting for hidden treasure chests, and battling enemies—twisted entities that the Library has not fully "digested."
Combat is fast-paced and engaging, striking a balance between button-mashing and strategic timing. Perfectly timed dodges grant invincibility frames, while well-timed heavy attacks can interrupt enemy moves. A unique character-swap mechanic allows you to switch fighters mid-battle, effectively turning combat into a tag team affair. This adds a dynamic layer to fights, though mistiming a dodge can still send you flying down the hallway.
Characters And Weapon Rolls
As a gacha game, Black Beacon features a system for obtaining characters and weapons, with weapons specifically matching certain characters. Both can be leveled up, and while the process involves many ingredients, much of the management can be automated. You might encounter characters through the gacha before meeting them in the story, adding variety and a sense of the convoluted flow of time.
Overall, Black Beacon is a quirky gacha game with an ambitious narrative and solid gameplay mechanics. We're eager to see how the story unfolds upon its official release.
If this sounds like your kind of game, you can explore Black Beacon further on the official website, App Store, or Google Play.
