Civilization 7: Firaxis Sparks Hope for Gandhi's Return

Author : Henry Update : Feb 19,2025

Civilization VII's release has left many veteran players questioning the absence of a familiar face: Mahatma Gandhi. A staple of the series since its inception in 1991, Gandhi's inclusion has been a constant, even spawning the legendary (and ultimately mythical) "Nuclear Gandhi" bug. His absence in Civ VII is notable.

However, according to Civilization VII lead designer Ed Beach, Gandhi's omission is not a permanent one. Beach offered reassurance to concerned fans, stating that Gandhi is likely to appear in future DLC.

Beach explained that the decision regarding which civilizations are included in the base game versus DLC involves strategic planning. He pointed out that iconic civilizations like Mongolia and Persia were also absent from the base games of previous iterations (Civ V and Civ VI). The team prioritizes including both established and fresh civilizations to maintain excitement. While some beloved leaders are initially omitted, a long-term plan ensures their eventual inclusion.

This confirms that Gandhi's return is anticipated, though not immediately.

Meanwhile, Firaxis is addressing the mixed user reviews on Steam. Criticisms primarily involve the user interface, limited map variety, and perceived missing features. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick acknowledged the negative feedback but expressed confidence in the game's long-term success, predicting that the core Civilization fanbase will grow to appreciate Civ VII with continued play.
