GTA 6 Launch Pushed to 2026, Rockstar Confirms

Rockstar Games has confirmed that GTA 6 will now release in 2026, delaying its highly anticipated launch. Discover the reasons behind this decision and its impact on other game releases.
GTA 6 Release Date Unveiled
Set for May 26, 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) has fans buzzing with excitement since its first trailer debuted. After years of speculation, Rockstar Games has announced a release date that caught many by surprise.
In a post on X on May 2, Rockstar Games revealed that GTA 6 will hit shelves on May 26, 2026. This contradicts earlier expectations set by Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s publisher, which hinted at a Fall 2025 launch during their Q3 2025 earnings call.
Rockstar issued an apology for the delay, expressing gratitude for fans’ patience. They stated, “We’re committed to delivering the quality you expect, and this additional time ensures we meet that standard.” More details are expected soon.
Take-Two Interactive Backs Rockstar’s Delay

Take-Two Interactive has fully endorsed Rockstar’s choice to extend GTA 6’s development timeline. In a May 2 statement on their website, CEO Strauss Zelnick shared his perspective on the shifted launch.
“We stand behind Rockstar’s decision to take extra time crafting Grand Theft Auto VI, a game poised to deliver an unparalleled entertainment experience,” Zelnick said.

The delay aligns with Take-Two’s strategy to avoid overlapping releases. Recently, Gearbox Entertainment moved Borderlands 4’s launch two weeks earlier. While some speculated this was to avoid clashing with GTA 6, Gearbox clarified that their decision was unrelated to other titles.
Take-Two remains focused on quality, stating, “Our robust pipeline of releases will drive sustained growth and deliver exceptional value to our shareholders.”
Devolver Digital Plans Same-Day Release as GTA 6

In response to GTA 6’s new release date, Devolver Digital, publisher of Cult of the Lamb, boldly announced their own game will launch on May 26, 2026. In an X post on May 2, they declared, “We’re not backing down.”
Devolver had previously vowed in March to release a title simultaneously with GTA 6. While the specific game remains undisclosed, possibilities include sequels to Cult of the Lamb, Enter the Gungeon, Hotline Miami, or a new IP.

Meanwhile, other publishers are steering clear of GTA 6’s release window. According to The Game Business Show’s March report, several anonymous executives indicated they would delay their titles to avoid competing with GTA 6.
Despite the delay, excitement for GTA 6 remains high. The open-world action-adventure title is slated for release on May 26, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Stay tuned for the latest updates on the game!
