Wonder Woman Script in Development, James Gunn Confirms
James Gunn has officially confirmed that a new Wonder Woman film is in active development, stating it is "currently being written."
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly ahead of the upcoming Superman release, DC Studios co-head James Gunn clarified that this new Wonder Woman project is separate from the previously announced HBO Max series, Paradise Lost.
"We're actively developing a Wonder Woman project," Gunn stated. "The script is being written as we speak."

Outside of the comic books, Diana of Themyscira has faced significant challenges in recent years. The live-action film series starring Gal Gadot lost momentum after Wonder Woman 1984 received a mixed response. Diana has yet to headline a dedicated animated series, and her first planned solo video game, announced back in 2021, was ultimately cancelled.
As IGN writer Carlos Morales recently noted, "During the peak rivalry between the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DCEU in the late 2010s, the initial Wonder Woman film stood as one of DC's clearest triumphs. The 2017 movie garnered widespread critical praise and earned over $800 million globally. Following the divisive reactions to Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad, Patty Jenkins' portrayal of Diana resonated with audiences in a way recent DC films had not. ... However, the 2020 sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, proved to be a major disappointment, splitting critics and failing to recover its production budget through theatrical release."
That film was released simultaneously on HBO Max and in theaters, as many moviegoers remained cautious about public outings during the pandemic.
A third installment was in development but eventually stalled, with no news of another Wonder Woman feature until this announcement. Naturally, with a new film now confirmed, speculation about who will next portray Diana is sure to resurface.
Superman premieres in theaters on July 11, launching James Gunn's rebooted DC Universe. It is set before Peacemaker Season 2, which debuts on HBO Max on August 21, 2025. Supergirl follows on June 26, 2026, though a release date for the Lanterns TV series remains unannounced.
Other confirmed DCU projects in development include Clayface, scheduled for September 11, 2026. However, the DCU film The Authority appears to be encountering difficulties. Gunn has indicated that Waller, a Peacemaker spinoff, "has frankly experienced a couple of setbacks." On a more positive note, the HBO Max series Booster Gold "is progressing quite well," and Paradise Lost, while "slow-moving, is still advancing."
