MultiVersus Fans Bid Farewell: 'Game Holds Special Place in Hearts'

Author : David Update : Jun 23,2025

*MultiVersus*, the free-to-play crossover fighting game that launched in 2024, is set to shut down permanently. Player First Games confirmed back in January that Season 5 would be the final season, with the servers going offline for good at 5pm PDT (12 noon EDT) on May 30, 2025.

The game was considered a major misstep for Warner Bros. Discovery. During a financial call in November 2024, the company revealed that *MultiVersus* underperformed significantly, leading to a $100 million writedown for its games division. This brought the total losses for the business to $300 million, following the poorly received launch of *Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League* earlier that year.

Just one month after the *MultiVersus* shutdown announcement, Warner Bros. confirmed it was canceling its planned Wonder Woman game and closing three studios: Monolith Productions, WB San Diego, and Player First Games, the developer behind *MultiVersus*.

In a Reddit thread titled "Tomorrow Multiversus shuts down, what are the final things you have to say about the game," hundreds of players shared their thoughts and memories celebrating the game’s legacy.

"MultiVersus was a dream. It was a platform fighter that focused on quick offense and 2v2 play that really supported team synergy,"

— wrote one player. "Even beyond its core concept, the casting was incredible. So many characters had their original voice actors reprising roles—like the late Kevin Conroy as Batman, Matthew Lillard as Shaggy, Kate Micucci as Velma, John DiMaggio as Jake, Eric Bauza as Bugs and Marvin, and more. The interactions between characters during and after matches were always a highlight."

"While some roster choices and move decisions were confusing—like Banana Guard and Shaggy being based on Ultra Instinct Shaggy—I can't deny that most of the movesets were incredibly well done. There will never be a game quite like MultiVersus."

Another fan reflected:

"Nothing will beat that feeling playing the beta back in 2022. I was absolutely hooked on the fast-paced nature of the game. I remember getting sick and spending days just immersed in this title. I’ll miss it dearly—and I can only hope it gets revived someday, maybe through a sequel or spiritual successor."

Others joined in the farewell:

"This game will always hold a special place in my heart. Right next to PlayStation All-Stars."

"Tom and Jerry was one of the most unique and fun fighters I’ve ever played and honestly reignited my love for fighting games."

Some fans remain hopeful, although most acknowledge the reality of the situation, especially given how complex the IP rights were. As one user noted, it would be “an IP nightmare” to bring the game back. Still, others are attempting to preserve the experience once the servers officially go dark.

As we wrote in IGN's MultiVersus review, which awarded the game an 8: “MultiVersus may not be ideal for local multiplayer gatherings, but its refreshing team-based combat makes it a standout online platform fighter.”
