MultiVersus to Shut Down When Season 5 Concludes in May

Player First Games announced the upcoming closure of its platform fighter, MultiVersus, concluding its run on May 30, 2025, at 9 a.m. PST. Season 5, launching February 4th, will be the game's final season.

The studio detailed the shutdown in a blog post, stating that online support will cease on May 30th. However, players will retain access to all acquired content offline via local and training modes. The team expressed gratitude for player support in a heartfelt message.

Real-money transactions are immediately discontinued, but Gleamium and character tokens remain usable until the May 30th shutdown. The game will be delisted from the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store concurrently.

MultiVersus's closure follows reports of its underperformance for Warner Bros. Discovery, resulting in a significant $100 million writedown, contributing to a larger $300 million total for the games sector. This financial setback, alongside the underperformance of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, contributed to the departure of Warner Bros. Games head David Haddad.

CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels highlighted MultiVersus's poor performance during a November financial call, stating, "We took another $100 million plus impairment due to the underperforming releases, primarily MultiVersus this quarter, bringing total writedown year-to-date to over $300 million in our games business, a key factor in this year’s studio profit decline.”

Despite the impending closure, Season 5 will introduce new characters: Lola Bunny (unlockable via daily calendar) and Aquaman (available through the battle pass), ensuring a final, content-rich season before the game's sunset.
