Nexon and Blizzard Sign New Deal: Overwatch Mobile Still in Play
The prospect of Overwatch making its way to mobile devices has been a topic of speculation for quite some time, particularly after revelations from Jason Schreier's book that a mobile version was previously shelved. However, recent developments suggest that this dream might still become a reality, thanks to a new agreement between Blizzard and the Korean developer Nexon.
While the primary focus of this deal is on securing the publishing and development rights for a new entry in the legendary StarCraft real-time strategy (RTS) franchise, it has stirred significant interest due to reports that the bidding also included rights for an Overwatch mobile game. This revelation has sparked excitement and speculation, especially since it hints at the possibility of an official sequel to Overwatch in the form of a mobile Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA).
The competition for StarCraft's rights was intense, with companies like Krafton and Netmarble also in the fray. If confirmed, Nexon will lead the charge in bringing new StarCraft experiences to fans. Yet, the potential for an Overwatch mobile MOBA has captured the imagination of the gaming community.
This wouldn't be the first time Blizzard has explored the MOBA genre with Overwatch characters, as evidenced by their earlier venture, Heroes of the Storm. It's conceivable that the proposed Overwatch MOBA could be a mobile version of Heroes of the Storm, though a completely new spin-off remains equally plausible. However, it's unlikely that this would be branded as 'Overwatch 3,' given the franchise's strong association with console and PC platforms.
Embracing the MOBA genre could be a strategic move for Overwatch, especially with emerging competitors like Marvel Rivals threatening to steal the spotlight. This could be the bold step Blizzard and their publishing partners need to revitalize and push forward this once-thriving franchise.
