Nintendo Teases New 3D Mario for Switch 2: 'Stay Tuned'

Author : Lucas Update : May 26,2025

Nintendo is stirring excitement with hints that a new 3D Mario game might be just around the corner, though fans will need to hold their breath a bit longer for official news. In a recent chat with CNN, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser responded to the community's longing for another major Mario title. While he didn't confirm a direct sequel to Super Mario Odyssey, his comments suggest that fans won't have to wait too long for more updates on Mario's next adventure.

"Stay tuned," Bowser advised, hinting at Nintendo's rich catalog of intellectual property that fans can look forward to seeing on their platforms. Although these remarks fall short of a concrete announcement, they offer hope to those disappointed by the absence of a new 3D Mario game in the Nintendo Switch 2 launch lineup. When Nintendo revealed its new hybrid console earlier this month, it showcased titles like Donkey Kong Bananza and Mario Kart World, but a traditional 3D Mario platformer was notably missing.

It's been almost eight years since the last major Mario release, Super Mario Odyssey, which debuted just months after the original Switch launch in October 2017. While games like Donkey Kong Bananza might help bridge the gap, it's not the Super Mario Odyssey 2 that many fans eagerly anticipated. However, given Mario's central role in Nintendo's storied catalog, it would be surprising not to see a new 3D Mario game announced in the near future.

As we await further news on Mario's next mainline adventure, you can stay updated by checking Nintendo’s revised Switch 2 pre-order schedule here ahead of the console's launch on June 5, 2025.
