Paul Rudd Nostalgically Promotes Nintendo Switch 2 with 90s SNES Ad Reference

Author : Leo Update : May 14,2025

Nintendo has brought back actor Paul Rudd to promote the Nintendo Switch 2 in a charming new commercial that playfully nods to his iconic 1991 Super Nintendo advertisement. The original ad featured a young Rudd sporting a long black jacket, beaded necklace, and a memorable hairstyle as he strutted into a drive-in movie theater. With the Super Nintendo in tow, he captivated an audience by playing classics like *The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past*, *F-Zero*, and *Sim City* on a giant screen. The ad famously ended with the slogan: "Now you're playing with power."

Fast forward to the present, and Rudd, remarkably unchanged in appearance, reprises his role in the Nintendo Switch 2 commercial. This time, he enters a living room, still donning the iconic jacket, necklace, and hairstyle. Rudd connects the new console to play *Mario Kart World* with comedians Joe Lo Truglio and Jordan Carlos, along with a child who affectionately calls him "Uncle Paul." They utilize the system's innovative GameChat feature, while playfully ribbing Rudd about his nostalgic attire and the theatrical elements of the original ad, including a fog machine and a fan. The commercial wraps up with Rudd updating the classic line to: "Now we're playing together." Despite its cheesiness, the ad successfully embraces the silliness of the original while delivering a heartwarming message.

IGN had the opportunity to interview Rudd about his experience filming the new commercial over three decades after the first. He amusingly recalled possibly wearing his own beaded necklace in the 1991 ad and revealed he spent downtime on set playing *Mario Kart World*. Sadly, he didn't get to keep a Nintendo Switch 2 as a memento. You can watch the full interview here:
