Sony to Remove PS4 Games from PlayStation Plus in 2024
Sony has announced that starting in January 2026, it will be phasing out PlayStation 4 games from its PlayStation Plus Essentials monthly games and the Games Catalog, shifting its focus entirely to PlayStation 5 titles. This decision was revealed alongside the announcement of February 2025's monthly titles in a recent PlayStation Blog post. The post detailed the ongoing benefits of the monthly games that subscribers can access at no extra cost, as well as updates to the Game Pass-style subscription service.
According to Sony, "As we shift to PS5, PS4 games will no longer be a key benefit and will only be occasionally offered for PlayStation Plus Monthly Games and Game Catalog." This change will not affect the monthly titles that players have already obtained. However, for the Games Catalog, titles will remain available until they are rotated out of the catalog during the monthly refresh.
Sony is committed to enhancing the PlayStation Plus experience and optimizing the benefits for its users. This includes exclusive discounts, online multiplayer access, online game save storage, and more. "As we shift our focus to PS5, we look forward to adding new PS5 titles monthly for you to enjoy," Sony stated, emphasizing their dedication to delivering a robust lineup of PS5 games.

The PlayStation 4, which debuted in 2013, has been succeeded by the PlayStation 5 since 2020. With over a decade since the PS4's launch and more than four years since the PS5's release, Sony noted that "many of our players are currently playing on PS5 and have shifted toward redeeming and accessing PS5 titles."
It remains uncertain whether Sony will reassign PS4 games to the Classics Catalog, which currently features ports and remasters of games from the original PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3. More information on this is expected to be announced as the transition date approaches.
