Ryan Gosling in Talks to Star in Shawn Levy's Star Wars Film

Shawn Levy, director of Deadpool and Wolverine, is reportedly on the verge of embarking on a journey to a galaxy far, far away, bringing Ryan Gosling along for the ride. The Hollywood Reporter announced that Levy's Star Wars project is in negotiations with Gosling for the lead role. Levy has been developing this film since 2022, with a script finalized last year. He's reuniting with Jonathan Tropper, screenwriter of This Is Where I Leave You and The Adam Project, both Levy-directed films.

Plot details remain tightly under wraps, with no information available on Gosling's potential character or the film's historical placement within the Star Wars timeline. What is known is that the story is unconnected to the Skywalker Saga. The Hollywood Reporter also indicates the project is intended as a standalone film, ruling out a planned trilogy.

Gosling's potential involvement has significantly accelerated the project's timeline. While Levy was previously slated to direct a boy band movie starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, THR suggests that Gosling's confirmation would expedite production on this Star Wars film, making it Levy's next project with a fall start date.

Star Wars is currently undergoing a transitional phase. Following the cancellation of The Acolyte, Disney+ recently concluded its latest series, Skeleton Crew. On the film front, Dave Filoni's Mandalorian and Grogu movie completed production in December, targeting a May 22, 2026 release. A new trilogy centered on Daisy Ridley's Rey from the sequel trilogy is also in development.

A release date for Levy's Star Wars film remains unannounced, pending the project's progression this year. For a comprehensive overview of upcoming Star Wars content, consult our 2025 preview.
