Conquering Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins: A Comprehensive Guide

The game constantly warns against fighting Lu Bu, but what if you're up for the challenge? This guide details how to defeat this formidable foe.

Should You Fight Lu Bu?

Battling Lu Bu is incredibly difficult; it may take over an hour. However, there are compelling reasons to fight him:

  • Bragging Rights: Defeating Lu Bu is a significant accomplishment.
  • Story Progression: If you side with Shu or Wei, the Battle of Xiapi in Chapter 4 necessitates fighting him.
  • Rewards: Victory at Hulao Gate earns you the "The Strongest" trophy. Post-game victory unlocks the game's ultimate weapon, the halberd.

Phase 1: Mounted Lu Bu

Prepare strategically:

  • Weapon: A multi-hit sword to stagger him is crucial.
  • Battle Arts: Choose arts with low Bravery cost, quick activation, and wide range (e.g., Falcon Flurry, Mad Blade Rush, Absconding Slash, Flying Dragon Slash).
  • Accessories: Prioritize health and defense boosts (Divine Bird’s Wing and Divine Turtle’s Shell).
  • Weapon Skill: A skill granting Bravery for Perfect Evades is highly beneficial.

Lu Bu primarily charges on Red Hare. He occasionally pauses; use this opportunity to unleash Battle Arts and retreat. His attacks generally have limited area of effect, except for Red Hare's jump attack, which is easily dodged. Once his health reaches 80%, he dismounts.

Phase 2: Unmounted Lu Bu

On foot, Lu Bu is relentless:

  • Red Aura: Indicates invulnerability to stuns during combos; evade his attacks. He charges in sets of three.
  • Grab Attack: He attempts a grab without his spear; easily evaded.
  • Orange Glow: His most dangerous attack; he fires three massive arrows three times. Use a ranged Battle Art like Absconding Slash to interrupt this. Close-range arts will likely result in death.
  • Musou Gauge: Keep it charged for emergency invincibility.

Lu Bu is surprisingly juggleable. Maintain close proximity to react quickly, and utilize evades frequently.

Phase 3: Musou Rage

Once Lu Bu's health is sufficiently low, he enters Musou Rage. He becomes unstaggerable and unleashes relentless attacks. The objective is to deplete his Fortitude before his Musou attack. Use all available resources: Musou attacks, Battle Arts, and rapid, powerful strikes. Failing to break his Fortitude before his Musou attack forces a restart of this phase.
