Zelda: Wind Waker HD Hopes Persist Amid Switch 2 GameCube Push

Author : Bella Update : May 17,2025

The announcement that The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 via the GameCube library has not dampened hopes for a full port of this fan-favorite adventure. According to Nate Bihldorff, Nintendo of America’s senior vice president of product development, in an interview with Kinda Funny's Tim Gettys, the availability of a game on Nintendo Switch Online does not rule out the possibility of a remaster or remake. This statement comes as a reassurance to fans, especially since popular titles like 2003's The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess have yet to be ported to the Nintendo Switch or its successor.

Concerns arose among fans when it was revealed that The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker—previously ported to the Wii U in 2013—would soon be accessible through Nintendo's premium subscription service upon the Nintendo Switch 2's release on June 5. However, Bihldorff clarified that the presence of The Wind Waker on Nintendo Switch Online does not preclude a future port to the Nintendo Switch 2, stating, "All options are on the table." Although nothing is confirmed, this leaves room for hope that a remaster or the same port version could still be in the works.

This news follows the recent Nintendo Direct presentation, where it was announced that GameCube titles would be added to Nintendo Switch Online as part of its premium library. This exciting update will allow subscribers to dive into classic 2000s-era games, including F-Zero GX and Soulcalibur 2, all available at launch this summer, along with The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. The library is set to expand further in the future, with titles like Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Strikers, and Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness on the horizon.

In other news, the Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order date faced delays in the United States due to import tariffs enacted by President Trump, causing financial market turbulence. This issue soon extended to Nintendo Canada, where pre-orders were also postponed.
