Phom, also known as Ta La or Tu Lo Kho, is a beloved card game deeply ingrained in Vietnamese culture, particularly popular in the northern regions. In the south, it's referred to as Ta La, while in the north, it's known as Phom. The objective of the game is to strategize the collection and discarding of cards to form sets called Phom, while minimizing the total score of cards that remain outside of these sets. Played with a traditional 52-card deck and offering various playing styles, Phom adds excitement and engagement to gatherings. During reunions or holidays, it's a staple game that brings joy to family and friends.

Terms in Phom, Ta La

• Phom: A set of three or more cards of the same suit with consecutive values, or three cards of the same value.
• Junk cards: Cards that do not belong to any Phom.
• Ù: Achieved when a player has three Phoms (no junk cards), making them the absolute winner.
• Stomach: The remaining cards after the initial deal.
• Mom: When a player ends the game without forming any Phom.
• Take the pin: In the last turn, playing a junk card that another player takes.
• Send: In the last turn, if a junk card can be added to another player's Phom, it can be sent and won't count at the game's end.
• Compensation: In the last turn, if a player takes another's pin and someone else Ùs afterwards, the player who took the pin receives compensation. The next player to take a pin must pay the first.
• Re: After playing a card, if another player plays, the cards are transferred, and you get an additional turn.

How to Play Phom - Ta La

• Players: The game can be played with a minimum of two and a maximum of four players. Each player receives nine cards, while the dealer or the previous winner gets ten. The remaining cards, called Stomach, are placed face-down in the center.
• Gameplay: The game proceeds counterclockwise, starting with the player holding ten cards.
  • Playing: The first player discards any card. The next player can take this card if it helps form a Phom; otherwise, they draw from the Stomach.
  • After taking/drawing: The player discards one card, and the next player follows suit.
• End of Game: The game ends when a player achieves Ù. If no one Ùs, the game concludes after four rounds, and points are calculated based on junk cards.

Scoring for Junk Cards When No One Ùs

• Winner: The player with the lowest junk card score wins.
• Card Values: A, J, Q, K are scored as 1, 11, 12, 13, respectively. Other cards retain their numerical value.
• Ties: In case of a tie, the first player to discard their cards wins.

Final Score Calculation

• First place: +6 points
• Second place: -1 point
• Third place: -2 points
• Last place: -3 points
• Taking the pin: -4 points
• Giving the pin: +4 points
• Ù or Ù Khan: +15 points (each other player loses 5 points)
• Burnt: Loses 4 points to the winner
