Pesten With Cards: A Guide to the Classic Dutch Card Game
Pesten With Cards, which translates to "Bullying With Cards," is a beloved Dutch card game. Similar games are played around the world, known by various names such as Mau-Mau, Crazy Eights, Shedding, Puque, Чешский Дурак, Фараон, Крокодил, Tschau Sepp, or Uno. The objective of Pesten With Cards is simple yet thrilling: be the first to shed all your cards. A key rule to remember is that you must announce "Last Card" before playing your final card to win. Forgetting this rule results in a penalty of drawing two additional cards.
Game Setup
The game supports multiple decks, including jokers. Each player starts with 7 cards, while the remaining cards form the stock or draw pile. The top card of the stock is turned face up to begin the game. Play proceeds clockwise, and if the initial card revealed is a "Pest-card," the dealer must follow its rules as if they played it.
Gameplay
During your turn, you must match the top card on the discard pile either by number or suit. Jokers and Jacks are wild and can be played at any time. If you can't play a card, you must draw one from the stock. If the drawn card is playable, you have the option to play it immediately or keep it in your hand.
Last Card Rule
When down to your last card, you must click the "Last Card" button above your cards to alert other players. Failure to do so before playing your last card incurs a penalty of drawing two cards, and your last card will not be played. Incorrectly declaring "Last Card" also results in a two-card penalty. You can press the "Last Card" button at any time, even when it's not your turn, ensuring you're prepared when your last card is due.
Winning the round requires playing your last card, but it must not be a special card, as outlined below.
Special Cards
Special cards trigger unique actions based on their number or type. These actions can be customized in the game settings to match local variations. Here are the standard actions:
Joker: The next player draws 5 cards. If they play a Joker, the following player draws 10, and each subsequent Joker adds 5 more cards to the draw. Players who draw cards cannot play them immediately; the turn passes to the next player.
Two: The next player draws 2 cards. Playing another Two adds 2 more cards to the next player's draw. Optionally, a Joker can be played on a Two, adding 5 cards. A Two cannot be played on a Joker.
Seven: You must play another card immediately. If you can't, you draw a card from the stock. Remember to say "Last Card" if applicable.
Eight: The next player skips their turn, allowing the player after them to go next. In a two-player game, playing an Eight lets you play another card.
Ten: Each player passes one card to the player on their left. Select the card you wish to pass by clicking on it.
