Diablo 4's 2025 Roadmap Disappoints Hardcore Fans, Confuses Former Blizzard President

Diablo 4 has unveiled its first content roadmap this week, offering a glimpse into the action role-playing game's future through 2025 and teasing what's on the horizon for 2026. In an IGN interview, game director Brent Gibson elaborated on the roadmap, covering topics from the second expansion to potential collaborations with other IPs. However, the community's reaction to the 2025 lineup has been mixed, with many expressing doubts about the sufficiency of the new content to keep players engaged.

The sentiment among some dedicated Diablo 4 players, like redditor Inangelion, reflects a longing for more substantial updates. "Oh boy! Can't wait for new Helltide color and temporary powers," Inangelion quipped, capturing the general feeling of underwhelm among the community. Other players, such as feldoneq2wire, pointed out that other ARPGs often introduce more impactful seasonal content like housing systems or intricate trading mechanics. In contrast, Diablo 4's new seasons seem to focus on superficial changes like the color of Helltides and temporary powers.

Fragrantbutte, a self-proclaimed fan of the game, expressed disappointment, saying, "I'm not a Diablo 4 hater, I love the game, but there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of meat on the bone here which is a bit disappointing." Artyfowl444 echoed this sentiment, noting that the vague promise of "and more" in the roadmap carried a heavy burden of expectation.

The community's concerns prompted a response from Diablo community manager Lyricana_Nightrayne on the main Diablo 4 subreddit thread. "We added fewer details to the later parts of the roadmap to accommodate for things the team is still working on," they explained. "This isn't all that's coming in 2025 :)"

One of the core issues highlighted by players is Blizzard's approach to seasonal content in Diablo 4. While some appreciate the fresh start each season brings, others find the reset makes deep engagement with the new content less rewarding. There's a divide between those who believe the game would become too overwhelming if all seasonal content stayed, and others contemplating taking a break until 2026 when more significant updates are expected.

Former Blizzard president Mike Ybarra weighed in on the debate via a post on X/Twitter. "Don't ship to check a box," Ybarra stated, advocating for a break in the cycle of releasing seasonal content, fixing issues, and repeating. He suggested pausing to address end-game issues, criticizing the current model where players complete content quickly and then wait for the next season. Ybarra also recommended annual expansions focused more on new classes, mobs, and end-game activities rather than extensive story elements.

The delay of the second expansion, initially planned for 2025 but now scheduled for 2026, has added to the community's frustrations. While the first expansion, Vessel of Hatred, was released in 2024, the gap until the next expansion has sparked discussions about Blizzard's initial plan to release yearly expansions.

In our interview with Gibson, he discussed the challenges of managing Diablo 4 as a live service game, balancing free seasonal content with major paid expansions. "I definitely feel like gamers are more hungry than they've ever been," Gibson remarked, emphasizing the need for adaptability in game development to meet ever-shifting player expectations. He highlighted the diverse community of Diablo players, from casual to hardcore, and how the team aims to cater to different player groups season by season, culminating in major expansions that address the entire community.

Diablo 4 Season 8 is set to launch later in April, with Season 9 following in the summer, and Season 10 slated for later in the year.
